Side-by-side comparison diagram of marine LED fish light and metal halide fishing lamp

When fishing fleet owners search for marine LED fish attracting light vs metal halide and plan to upgrade their fish lighting system, the most common question is whether to keep metal halide lamps or switch to LED fish lights. This comparison article answers this high-frequency searched question, using real test data collected from the 8 squid fishing vessels in Hainan Lingao retrofit project.

Metal halide fish lamps have dominated offshore fishing lighting for decades. Many ship owners are familiar with this technology, but they keep struggling with high power draw, slow warm-up and frequent breakdowns in salt spray environment. New marine LED fish attracting lights become a mainstream replacement option in recent years. We compare both technologies in key dimensions to help buyers quickly judge which light source fits their fishing boats.

Parameter Comparison Table

Item Traditional Metal Halide Fish Lamp Marine LED Fish Attracting Light (HRLUX)
Rated Power 1500W~2000W 1000W / 1200W
Warm-up Time 3~5 minutes Instant on, no preheating
Energy Consumption High 38% power saving
Service Life 3,000 ~ 5,000 hours 50,000 hours
Annual Failure Rate 45% (salt fog environment) ≤5%
Anti-vibration performance Poor, fragile quartz tube Excellent solid-state structure
Spectrum Tuning Fixed spectrum, hard to adjust Customizable spectrum for target fish
Flicker Risk Visible flicker at unstable generator voltage Flicker-free constant current drive

Note: The above test data comes from the offshore squid fishing condition in Lingao, Hainan. Results will vary with sea area, target fish species and generator setup. Do not directly copy these figures to all fleet projects.

Practical On-board Performance Differences

1.Startup feature: Metal halide lamps require waiting several minutes to reach full brightness. If the lamp restarts after accidental power cut, you need a long cooling waiting period. LED lights turn to full brightness instantly. When squid appear suddenly, fishermen can turn on lights right away without waiting.

2.Power & generator load: Heavy power consumption of metal halide lamps increases generator fuel burn. After switching to LED, the generator runs under lighter load, less fuel consumption and less engine wear.

3.Maintenance cost: Metal halide bulbs are easy to damage under vibration and salt spray. Crew need to replace lamps frequently on rough sea deck. LED marine lights greatly cut offshore maintenance work and safety risks.

4.Light control & catch effect: Metal halide has wide uncontrolled light spill, much light wasted upwards. LED with dedicated lens concentrates light onto sea surface. In Lingao sea trial, properly configured LED lights brought 12~18% higher squid catch than old metal halide system.

Who Should Choose Metal Halide?

Small fleets with very short fishing seasons and tight one-time budget. If the vessel only sails a few months per year and cannot afford upfront investment, keeping existing metal halide lamps may be a temporary choice. But prepare for continuous recurring cost on replacement bulbs and fuel.

Who Should Upgrade to LED Fish Lights?

Fishing vessels sailing for long hours every year, squid fishing boats, fleets trying to reduce offshore maintenance risk and pursue stable catch. Although LED has higher upfront purchase cost, fuel saving and less maintenance will offset the investment within a few fishing seasons. This is the main reason most large fleets in Southeast Asia and Africa gradually replace metal halide lamps.

FAQ

Q1: Can I directly swap metal halide lamp with LED without modifying brackets?

A1: In Lingao project, HRLUX 1000W/1200W marine LED fish light can reuse most original brackets. Site survey is required to check bracket strength and dimension.

Q2: Do I need to upgrade ship generator after switching to LED fish lights?

A2: LED consumes less power, usually no generator upgrade is needed. We still recommend calculating total load before retrofit.
